Pinakothek der Moderne

The Pinakothek der Moderne is an art museum in Munich that combines four collections of modern and contemporary art under one roof. The building features a central glass rotunda with four wings extending outward, each dedicated to different artistic disciplines and collections.

The museum opened in 2002 as a new home for artworks that had previously been shown at the Neue Pinakothek. It was designed to properly house the growing collections of modern works created after 1900.

Four specialized museums share the building, allowing visitors to see paintings, sculptures, photographs, drawings, architectural models, and furniture design side by side. The arrangement of modern art, prints, design, and architecture collections makes it possible to discover connections between different artistic expressions.

The museum is open daily from Tuesday through Sunday, allowing visitors to explore the four collections at their own pace. It is advisable to set aside several hours to get a proper sense of all the departments.

The museum uses an exhibition approach called MIX & MATCH that brings together artworks from different fields thematically. This allows visitors to discover unexpected connections between modern design and architecture or between photography and fine art.
