Large Red Sphere, Granite sculpture at Türkentor, Munich, Germany.
The Large Red Sphere is a red granite sculpture located inside the Türkentor building in Munich, measuring about 2.6 meters across. It rests on a tiered pedestal beneath a glass roof that illuminates the polished surface with natural daylight.
The Türkentor building was constructed in 1826 as part of Prince Arnulf Barracks and is the sole surviving structure after the complex was demolished in the 1970s. The sculpture itself was later integrated into this space in the early 2000s.
The sphere sits inside a historic building and is naturally lit from above through glass roofing, creating a special effect. Visitors can view the smooth, polished surface up close and sense the scale of the object within this enclosed space.
The building is accessible via tram line 27 to the Pinakotheken stop or via U-Bahn stations at Odeonsplatz. The space receives natural daylight, which makes the red surface particularly visible during the day.
The sphere was lowered through the glass roof during installation because its enormous size and weight made standard delivery impossible. This unusual transportation method is part of the story that the artwork subtly tells visitors.
