Vohburg an der Donau, city in Bavaria, Germany
Vohburg an der Donau is a small town in Upper Bavaria, sitting directly on the bank of the Danube. The old town has narrow lanes, old buildings, and a 15th-century gate called the Klein-Donau-Tor that still marks the entrance to the historic core.
The area around Burgberg was already settled in the Bronze Age and once held a large fortification on the hill. Over the centuries the site was destroyed and rebuilt several times, and after the Thirty Years War it was finally abandoned.
The market square at the center of town is where daily life plays out, with locals meeting to shop and chat. Throughout the year, seasonal markets and folk festivals bring together food, music, and local traditions in the open air.
The old town is easy to explore on foot since the distances are short and the layout is easy to follow. Sturdy shoes are a good idea because some of the historic lanes have uneven cobblestones.
Agnes Bernauer, a young woman from Augsburg, spent three years living with Prince Albrecht III on Burgberg before being drowned in the Danube in 1435 because she was not of noble birth. Her story is still performed every year during the Agnes Bernauer Festspiele held on the hill.
