Vohburg an der Donau, city in Bavaria, Germany
Vohburg an der Donau is a small town in Upper Bavaria, Germany, located directly on the Danube River. The historic center has narrow streets and old buildings with traditional design, with the old town accessible through the Klein-Donau-Tor gate from the 15th century.
The history of Vohburg reaches back to around 1500 BC during the Bronze Age, with a large fortification once standing on Burgberg. This area was the site of numerous conflicts and was destroyed and rebuilt several times before being abandoned after the Thirty Years War.
The market square is the heart of Vohburg, where locals and visitors gather. Regular events showcase local traditions and customs, including spring markets, folk festivals, and Christmas markets with local food and music.
The town is easy to explore on foot, with clean and well-maintained streets, benches, and shaded areas for resting. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes, as the historic old town with its narrow streets requires considerable walking.
Agnes Bernauer, a young woman from Augsburg, lived for three years with Prince Albrecht III. on Burgberg before being drowned in 1435 due to her non-noble birth. Her tragic story is commemorated annually through the Agnes Bernauer Festspiele.
