Beethoven House, Birth house museum in Bonn, Germany
The Beethoven House is a multi-story building in the old town of Bonn that now serves as a museum displaying original manuscripts, personal belongings, and historical musical instruments. The exhibition rooms are distributed across several floors and follow a thematic route through the life of the composer.
Ludwig van Beethoven was born in this house in December 1770 and spent his childhood here. The building opened as a museum in 1893 and received the status of an architectural monument in 1927.
The birth house carries the name of the composer who spent his early years here before moving to Vienna. Visitors today walk through the living rooms and can see how middle-class families lived in Bonn during the late 18th century.
The museum sits near the Rhine riverbank in central Bonn and opens from Wednesday to Monday between 10 AM and 6 PM. The rooms are accessible by stairs, and a visit typically takes between one and two hours.
The treasure chamber on the upper floor holds the largest collection worldwide of objects belonging to the composer, including his final grand piano and handwritten scores. Chamber music pieces are performed daily in one of the halls on instruments from around 1800.
