Großer Knollen

Großer Knollen rises to 687 meters above sea level, featuring extensive beech forests on its lower slopes and spruce trees at higher elevations.

The mountain's observation tower, constructed in 1904, replaced an earlier wooden structure that was damaged by lightning in 1890 and later increased in height.

The Knollenbaude mountain inn serves traditional German dishes to hikers and functions as a social gathering point for outdoor enthusiasts in the Harz region.

Multiple marked hiking trails connect the summit to surrounding towns including Bad Lauterberg, Herzberg, Scharzfeld, and Sankt Andreasberg through the forested landscape.

The mountain contains deposits of porphyritic volcanic rock, which creates distinct reddish colorations visible along several walking paths near the summit.
