Unicorn Cave

The Unicorn Cave is a natural cave in the western Harz Mountains that extends approximately 610 meters underground. It contains abundant fossil animal bones and stone formations that developed over thousands of years.

The cave was first documented in 1541 and contains remains of over 70 animal species from the Ice Age. This extensive collection of fossils makes it an important record of ancient life in the region.

The cave holds special meaning for people because explorers once believed the animal remains belonged to mythical creatures, leading them to create elaborate stories about the site. This folklore shaped how visitors understood and experienced the place for generations.

Visitors can explore 270 meters of the cave on guided tours offered from April through September. Wear comfortable walking shoes as the ground is uneven and the air inside stays cool year-round.

The cave houses a Giant deer bone identified in 2021 as the oldest known piece of art created by Neanderthals. This discovery reveals that these early people engaged in artistic expression by working on objects.
