Hansaplatz metro station, Underground station in Hansaviertel district, Germany
Hansaplatz is an underground metro station featuring a spacious central platform approximately 9 meters wide. The walls are covered with silver-gray glass tiles while aluminum columns support the structure above.
The station was completed in 1957 as part of an international building exhibition but regular metro service did not begin until August 28, 1961. This delay reflected the turbulent political circumstances affecting Berlin at that time.
A memorial plaque at the southern exit honors Jewish residents from the neighborhood who were deported during the Nazi period. This serves as a place for visitors to remember this part of local history.
The station entrance at Grips Theater has an elevator installed in 2017 providing step-free access for all visitors. Bus line 106 also serves the area if you need alternative transportation options.
During the 1957 building exhibition a Volkswagen Beetle was pulled through an underground tunnel connecting this station to Zoologischer Garten to show visitors the construction work. This quirky demonstration remains largely forgotten today.
