Hansaviertel, Housing estate in Mitte district, Berlin, Germany
The Hansaviertel district spans 0.53 square kilometers between Tiergarten Park and the Spree River, featuring modernist residential buildings and green spaces.
Following extensive damage during World War II, the Hansaviertel underwent reconstruction from 1957 to 1961 as part of the International Building Exhibition Interbau.
International architects including Walter Gropius, Oscar Niemeyer, and Alvar Aalto designed residential structures that exemplified modern architectural principles and social housing concepts.
The Hansaplatz subway station connects residents to Berlin's transport network, while the district includes essential amenities like shops, a library, and two churches.
The streets bear names of former Hanseatic League cities, and north of the railway, original Gründerzeit buildings stand in contrast to post-war modern developments.
