Hansaviertel

Hansaviertel is a housing estate in Mitte featuring residential buildings designed in modernist style, spread across open grounds with parks and green spaces. The structures display varied architectural approaches while the layout allows easy movement and sightlines throughout the district.

Following widespread destruction during World War II, the district was completely rebuilt starting in 1957 as the site of the Interbau international building exhibition. This showcase brought architects from multiple countries to demonstrate post-war modern housing solutions.

The district's name references the Hanseatic League heritage, and the open layout encourages residents to move between buildings and shared green areas. Visitors notice how the streets feel designed for walking and meeting others rather than rushing through.
