AEG’s Turbine factory

AEG’s Turbine factory, Industrial factory in Moabit, Germany.

Description

The AEG Turbine Factory is a production hall in Moabit, a neighborhood in Berlin's Mitte district, defined by exposed steel columns and continuous glass surfaces. Its lattice framework supports a pitched roof that allows daylight to enter from multiple angles across the interior.

History

Peter Behrens designed this facility in 1909 for the Allgemeine Elektrizitäts-Gesellschaft to manufacture large turbines. The building became a reference for later industrial projects that combined function and form without elaborate ornamentation.

Culture

The building's design influenced modern architectural movements through its incorporation of industrial elements and structural transparency, setting standards for future industrial spaces.

Practical

The building stands on Huttenstrasse near Westhafen and is easily visible from the street. The exterior view shows the construction most clearly, as access to the interior is usually restricted.

Did you know?

The side facades show an irregular window grid that emerged from the internal workflow requirements. This arrangement creates shifting light patterns that move across the wall surfaces throughout the day.
