Hohegeiß

Hohegeiß is a district of Braunlage situated in the Harz Mountains at roughly 620 meters elevation, with scattered homes nestled among forests and meadows. The landscape opens up with views across surrounding slopes and is crisscrossed by hiking paths that connect different parts of the settlement.

The wooden church Zur Himmelspforte was built in 1701 and has anchored the community's spiritual life ever since. During Germany's division, the settlement sat very close to the inner-German border, profoundly affecting how residents experienced daily life.

The former rectory building anchors the village center and tells stories about daily life in the mountains over generations. Inside, displays show traditional crafts and the impact of the divided Germany period on this border region.

The area offers extensive hiking trails suitable for different fitness levels and winter sports facilities including cross-country skiing paths and the Am Brande ski area. It serves well as a base for exploring the wider mountain region or as a starting point for longer hikes.

The forest swimming pool with its diving tower and beach volleyball court offers an unexpected place to cool off surrounded by mountain woods. This combination of nature-immersed bathing and mountain views makes it a distinctive recreation spot in the area.
