Stöberhai, Mountain summit in South Harz, Germany
Stöberhai is a mountain summit in the South Harz region, reaching 720 meters in elevation and forming the highest point near the Oder Dam. The area is accessible via multiple hiking routes that approach from various directions across the terrain.
A tavern was built on the summit in 1872, with the Berghotel and observation tower added in 1889. These early structures transformed the location into a destination during the late industrial era.
The name Stöberhai combines the memory of a charcoal burner named Stöber with the word 'Hai', which means a forest clearing. This naming reflects how historical occupations and landscape features became embedded in local place names.
The summit is reachable from several directions, though the northern side behind the Oder Reservoir has fewer established routes. Hikers should choose their approach based on their starting point and preferred difficulty level.
From 1957 to 1992, a NATO observation tower stood on the summit to monitor East German military communications. This Cold War purpose gave the location a hidden strategic role in the region.
