Caesar's Rhine bridges, Wooden bridge across Rhine River in Neuwied, Germany
The bridge extended 400 meters across the Rhine River with a width of 9 meters, constructed from wooden piles driven into the riverbed.
Julius Caesar ordered the construction of this military bridge in 55 BCE during his campaign against Germanic tribes on the eastern bank of Rhine.
The bridge demonstrated Roman engineering capabilities to Germanic tribes, who had never witnessed such substantial construction across the Rhine River.
Roman engineers completed the bridge construction in ten days using local timber resources and specialized pile-driving equipment to secure the foundation.
The structure included 50 support sections maintained by sharpened tree trunks that were systematically hammered into the Rhine River base.
