Großer Auerberg, Mountain summit in Mansfeld-Südharz, Germany.
Großer Auerberg is a mountain in the eastern Harz region with two closely spaced summits. The twin peaks sit roughly 470 meters apart at nearly identical elevations.
The mountain formed through volcanic activity and consists of rhyolite and quartz porphyry rocks. These rocks developed during ancient geological processes in the region.
The mountain stands as a prominent natural landmark within the Harz Nature Park, contributing to the region's outdoor recreation and geological research activities.
Hiking trails lead to the mountain from nearby towns including Straßberg, Hayn, Schwenda, Stolberg, and Breitenstein. You can reach it on foot from any of these starting points.
Natural quartz crystals form within the rocks here and are known locally as Stolberg Diamonds, reaching up to 13 millimeters in size. These sparkling formations attract mineral collectors interested in finding them.
