Rosarium Uetersen

Rosarium Uetersen is a botanical garden dedicated primarily to roses, spreading across several hectares centered around ponds. The layout features hundreds of rose varieties arranged in organized beds, with pathways and small islands creating a structured layout throughout the grounds.

The garden was designed between 1929 and 1934 by landscape architect Berthold Thormählen and formally opened in 1934. Its creation coincided with the town's 700-year celebration and established the location as a major center for rose breeding.

The garden reflects the town's identity as a center of rose cultivation, with many plants named after local breeders and their families. You notice how roses are woven into the daily experience here, marking the place as important to the community's heritage.

Information plaques at many rose beds explain the varieties, their breeders, and origins, making it easy for visitors to learn about individual plants. The garden features accessible pathways throughout and is best visited during warm weather when the roses are in bloom.

An island called Hochzeitsinsel sits in the center of the larger pond and connects to both garden sides via two bridges. This small feature creates an unexpected focal point that changes how visitors experience moving through the space.
