Freiburg Botanical Garden, University botanical garden in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany.
Freiburg Botanical Garden is a collection of plants from different climates and habitats, with outdoor areas and four heated greenhouses that house thousands of species together. Here you find sections for alpine plants, heathland, marshes, and dune habitats side by side, offering different scenes throughout the year.
The garden was founded in 1620 as a medicinal plant collection for Freiburg University, making it one of the oldest in the German-speaking region. Its original purpose was practical: medical students needed to learn and recognize healing herbs.
The garden serves as an educational center where students and researchers study plant morphology, biomechanics, and Black Forest fossil flora from the Carboniferous period.
The outdoor areas are accessible daily from morning until evening, while the greenhouses open on specific weekdays at set hours. Signage throughout the garden is clear, and there are plenty of pathways to walk, though some hills require climbing.
The garden is home to grass snakes in its natural ponds, giving visitors the rare chance to observe the animals in their natural habitat. These peaceful creatures are an important part of the local ecosystem and often spotted in the wetter areas.
