Alte Anatomie, Historical medical building in Ingolstadt, Germany
The Alte Anatomie is a two-story baroque building with pilasters, cornices, a mansard roof, and a central pavilion topped with a tower-like crown. It now houses the German Museum of Medical History, which presents exhibitions about how medicine and science developed over many centuries.
Built between 1723 and 1736 by architect Gabriel de Gabrieli, this structure was the medical faculty of the University of Ingolstadt. The university moved to Landshut in 1800, marking the end of its use as a teaching hospital and school.
The lecture hall's ceiling displays baroque allegorical frescoes celebrating medicine and its scientific branches. These artworks helped medical students understand how different disciplines connected to healing and natural knowledge.
The building is located at Anatomiestraße 18-20 and can be visited as it now functions as a museum. Visitors can walk through the rooms and see how medical teaching and learning were organized in this space.
An attached botanical garden established in 1722 contained around 380 plant species used to teach medical students about medicinal herbs and their uses. This collection showed how closely plant knowledge and medical training were connected in that era.
