Alte Apotheke

The Alte Apotheke is a German restaurant housed in a historic building in Altkötzschenbroda with exposed wooden beams and regional architectural features from the Saxon tradition. The establishment features multiple dining areas, including a cellar room with about 50 seats, a dispensary room with about 30 seats, and an outdoor garden with capacity for roughly 100 guests.

The building was established in 1720 when pharmacist Irmler opened his pharmacy there. Later the space served as a wine cellar, grocery store, and coal trading business before becoming a restaurant.

The restaurant draws its character from its former pharmaceutical use, which shows through the displayed mortars, glass vessels, and old medical instruments scattered throughout the dining rooms. These objects serve as reminders of the place's history in healing arts and trade.

The restaurant has different access points to its dining areas, allowing visitors to explore various parts of the building, including the cozy cellar and the garden. It's helpful to choose the dining area based on your mood and weather, as each space offers a different dining experience.

Every Tuesday, the kitchen serves fresh-baked pork knuckles with sauerkraut and fried potatoes as a special seasonal offering. This dish draws regular visitors who come specifically for this traditional Saxon specialty.
