Schloss Urach, Medieval residential palace in Bad Urach, Germany.
Schloss Urach is a medieval castle standing at the edge of the Swabian Alps with massive stone walls featuring architectural elements from different periods. The building combines rooms from various centuries, so the layout reflects the long history of occupation and change.
Count Eberhard the Mild began construction of the castle in the late 14th century, but most of what is visible today was built by his successors. After 1442, it became an important ducal residence under Count Ludwig and underwent several phases of rebuilding and expansion.
The Golden Hall stands out with its Corinthian columns and three-sided lighting that fills the room with brightness and splendor. The gilt furnishings and wall decorations from the 15th century show how wealthy noble families lived during that period.
The best time to visit is during the warmer months when the castle is fully open and outdoor areas are accessible. Visitors should bring comfortable shoes, as the interior has stairs and uneven historic floors.
The collection of sleighs housed here spans several centuries and shows how nobility traveled during winter months in earlier times. These vehicles are so rare that few other castles in Europe hold comparable collections.
