Alte Bibliothek, Baroque library in Berlin-Mitte, Germany.
Alte Bibliothek is a baroque building with a symmetrical stone facade, columns, and ornate details across its exterior walls. Inside are reading and exhibition rooms that house manuscripts, rare books, and historical collections from different periods.
Architect Georg Christian Unger designed the building in 1780, and the library opened to the public in 1784. It later survived political upheaval and wartime, making it an important witness to Berlin's history.
The building was established as Bibliotheca Berolinensis and served Berlin's scholarly community as a place for intellectual exchange. Its spaces reflect the Enlightenment period when books and learning were central to educated society.
The building is located in Berlin-Mitte near public transportation stations and is easily accessible for visitors. Regular events and exhibitions take place here, which are open to the public.
The building was once known as the 'Commode' because its broad, flat shape resembled a baroque dresser. This nickname was used by Berliners for a long time and shows how locals saw the structure in everyday city life.
