Old Stock Exchange, Baroque assembly building in Leipzig, Germany

The Old Stock Exchange is a two-story Baroque building with ornate facades, columns, and rounded archways, guarded by statues of trade deities. The interior features elaborately decorated ceilings and stucco work that impress all who enter.

The building began construction in 1678 after 30 merchants asked the city for a neutral trading place. This project helped establish Leipzig as an important trading center in central Europe.

The interior displays ceiling paintings and stucco details that blend German and Italian artistic traditions. These decorative elements create a space that still expresses the artistic exchange between northern and southern Europe.

The building sits on Naschmarkt and functions as a venue for concerts, readings, and conferences. Visitors should plan ahead since use varies depending on the current program.

The building is Leipzig's oldest merchant assembly hall and retains its original Baroque details from the 1600s. These elements make it a rare example of architecture from that period that has remained largely unchanged.
