Abtei Maria Frieden, Trappist nunnery in Dahlem, Germany.
Abtei Maria Frieden is a Trappist nunnery in Dahlem, in the Eifel region of Germany, where a community of sisters lives according to Cistercian rule. The complex includes a church, working farm buildings, and garden areas tended by the community.
The nunnery was founded in 1952 when Mariawald Abbey acquired a former sheep farm in the area and established a new community there. It received full abbey status in 1955, just a few years after its foundation.
The sisters follow a daily rhythm of prayer, silence, and work that is visible in how the grounds are kept and how visitors are received. Entering the chapel during a service, one can hear the Gregorian chant sung by the community, a practice rooted in Cistercian tradition.
The church is open to visitors during services, and it is worth checking ahead about current visiting conditions before making the trip. Once there, keeping quiet is expected throughout the site, as the monastic schedule continues regardless of outside visitors.
The site was originally a working sheep farm before it became a monastery, and the community continued to work the land after moving in. This agricultural past is still reflected in the layout of the grounds, which retains the functional character of a working property.
