Prüm Abbey, Benedictine abbey in Prüm, Germany
Prüm Abbey is a former Benedictine monastery in the town of Prüm with a church dating from 1721 and historic buildings. The complex now also houses a gymnasium, with classrooms occupying the former monastic structures.
The abbey was founded in 721 and received strong support from the Carolingian family under King Pepin. By the 11th and 12th centuries, it had become one of the region's most important monastic centers.
The monastery became a center of learning whose legacy continues in the school that now occupies the site. The buildings shape the town's character and mark where religious life once centered.
The complex is easily reached on foot and lies in the town center, where visitors can view the church and outer buildings. Note that parts of the grounds serve the school and may not be accessible at all times.
The monastery was known for its collection of relics and handwritten manuscripts, which made it an important pilgrimage destination in medieval times. These treasures attracted visitors from distant places seeking spiritual connection on special feast days.
