Abtei Wadgassen, Premonstratensian monastery in Saarlouis, Germany.
Abtei Wadgassen is a former Premonstratensian monastery located in Saarlouis where the Bist and Saar rivers meet. The buildings date from different periods and now house the German Newspaper Museum as well as a factory outlet center.
The monastery was founded in 1135 and remained the only Premonstratensian establishment in the Saarland region for centuries. It endured until its dissolution in 1792 as an important religious center in the western part of the German territories.
The monastery served as a spiritual and educational hub for the surrounding region over many centuries, shaping the life of numerous communities in the Saar-Mosel area. The buildings today still reflect this period of religious importance and learning.
The grounds are open to the public and allow visitors to walk through the historic buildings and grounds. It is best to plan for several hours to fully explore the German Newspaper Museum and the surrounding area.
The monastery once controlled more than two hundred estates and farms spread across a vast territory from Upper Lorraine to the Harz Mountains. This extensive agricultural network formed the foundation of its economic prosperity and independence.
