Altmünsterkirche, Protestant church in central Mainz, Germany
Altmünsterkirche is a Protestant church between Münsterstraße and Walpodenstraße, featuring two white towers that mark the Mainz old town. Two organs occupy the interior space, shaped by clear architectural lines.
The church originated around 700 AD as a women's convent founded by Saint Bilhildis under Benedictine rules. The community shifted to Cistercian observance in the 13th century.
The church was historically a center for religious processions and celebrations that shaped life in Mainz. Today, the two organs are used by music students, bringing acoustic vitality to the interior.
The building sits in the central old town area and is easy to reach on foot. The best visit depends on whether you want to explore the exterior or check for events taking place inside.
Following World War II, architect Otto Vogel completely rebuilt the structure in the 1950s and relocated the main entrance to Walpodenstraße. This reconstruction rescued the church and gave it a new form in the postwar era.
