Eider Barrage, Flood barrier in Tönning, Germany

The Eider Barrage extends 4.9 kilometers across the Eider River mouth, featuring two rows of five hydraulically operated gates that regulate water flow.

The construction of this coastal protection structure began in 1967 with an investment of 170 million Deutsche Mark and reached completion in 1973.

The Eider Barrage represents northern German engineering excellence through its integration of flood protection systems with maritime transportation infrastructure.

Visitors access the barrage via a road tunnel that runs through the structure, while a separate footpath provides observation points of the North Sea.

The implementation of 48,000 geotextile containers in 1993 strengthened the seaward side of the barrage, establishing new standards in coastal protection technology.
