Peenemünde, Military research facility in Usedom-Nord, Germany.
Peenemünde is a municipality at the northern end of Usedom island, where the Peene River meets the Baltic Sea. The flat coastal area consists of sandy beaches, pine forests and open fields between the residential settlements.
The German military established a research center here during World War II, which became the main site for developing the V-2 rocket. After the war ended, Soviet forces took control of the area and dismantled the technical installations.
The museum inside the former power station displays original equipment and documents from the wartime rocket program. Walking through the preserved halls gives insight into how engineers and technicians carried out their work during those years.
Ferries from Kröslin and trains from nearby coastal towns bring visitors to the municipality. The area is small enough to explore on foot or by bicycle.
Concrete ramps and bunkers from the wartime period still stand at different locations throughout the municipality. These structures show how extensive the testing facilities once were.
