Herzogenhorn, Mountain summit in Bernau im Schwarzwald, Germany.
Herzogenhorn is a 1415-meter mountain summit near Bernau in the Black Forest of Baden-Württemberg. It is the third highest peak in the Black Forest range and offers diverse routes accessible from the valley below.
Herzogenhorn was first documented in 1328 and takes its name from a margrave of the region. During the Thirty Years War, the mountain hosted military fortifications built under Margrave Ludwig William's command.
The summit is a long-established gathering place for athletes and hikers from across the region. People use the mountain regularly for training and practicing various winter sports.
Several hiking trails lead from the valley to the summit, ranging from easy to challenging routes. The best time to hike is from May to October, when the weather is stable and the paths are dry.
On clear days, the summit offers views stretching all the way to the Rhine and Lake Constance. During temperature inversions when valleys fill with clouds, the mountain feels like an island floating above a sea of fog.
