The site evolved from medieval fortifications to a zoological garden before conversion to a public park in the 1930s. Further redesigns followed after World War II and for the International Horticultural Exhibition in 1963.
The Japanese garden contains a tea house where ceremonies follow traditional practice between May and September. Visitors use the area for quiet reflection, and the design follows authentic principles.
Several entrances connect the park to Dammtor station, the Landungsbrücken piers, and exhibition halls, with free access year-round. Main sections are signposted, and wide paths make navigation through the different garden sections straightforward.
Water-light concerts take place each evening between May and September, with fountains choreographed to classical music pieces. The performances regularly draw spectators who settle on the surrounding grass areas.
