Alter Botanischer Garten Hamburg, Botanical garden in Neustadt, Hamburg, Germany
The Alter Botanischer Garten Hamburg is a botanical garden in Neustadt with five connected greenhouses that house plants from warm climates around the world. The structures offer a spacious interior where visitors can walk among these collections while viewing the surrounding city through transparent walls.
A professor established this garden in 1821 as a place for cultivating and studying plants from different regions. About a century later, an alpine garden section was added to the grounds, expanding the types of plants on display.
The greenhouses serve as a place where visitors observe exotic plants and connect with botanical diversity in their everyday experience. The layout encourages people to spend time among these collections, making it a space for hands-on exploration and learning.
The garden opens on weekdays starting at 9 AM and weekends starting at 10 AM, with these hours running from March through October. Visitors should allow enough time to walk through all the greenhouses and explore the different plant regions at a comfortable pace.
The greenhouses were built using an innovative construction where large glass panels hang without visible internal supports. This design allows visitors to view the plants without obstruction from pillars or beams.
