Tangermünde, Medieval town in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany.
Tangermünde is a town in Saxony-Anhalt that sits on elevated ground above the river. Remains of a palace, church towers, and brick buildings shape the structure of the medieval center.
The town received city rights around 1260 and later became a residence of the margraves. Fires in the 16th and 17th centuries destroyed parts of the center, but the medieval structure remained.
The Neustädter Gate shows red brick walls with an arched tower and wooden gate structure. This combination of stone and timber represents the merchant gate style of medieval trade routes.
The old town is best explored on foot since most buildings are just a few minutes apart. The river serves as an orientation point, and you can navigate the terrain from different routes.
On a side street off the market square stands a half-timbered house from the early 1600s with visible wooden frames. The building was preserved through the city fires and modifications of later periods.
