Elbebrücke Hämerten, Railway bridge in Tangermünde and Schönhausen, Germany
The Elbebrücke Hämerten is a steel truss bridge that stretches around 800 meters across the Elbe River, linking Tangermünde with Schönhausen. The modern structure carries railway traffic and is built from sturdy steel framework designed for constant daily use.
The original bridge was destroyed in 1945, after which a single-track replacement was built in 1947. The current structure was constructed starting in the 1990s and fully replaced the earlier versions.
The bridge forms part of a major railway line that has connected communities across the Elbe River for generations. It plays an essential role in linking regions and supporting daily travel between northern and southern areas.
The bridge carries only railway traffic and is not open to pedestrians or cyclists. Visitors can view the structure from the riverbanks or nearby paths at a safe distance.
The bridge was built by Krupp Industrietechnik and Philipp Holzmann, two firms known for major engineering projects in Germany. A cornerstone ceremony took place in 1992, marking the start of this complex construction effort across one of the country's most important rivers.
