Ehrenburg Palace, Gothic Revival palace in Coburg, Germany
Ehrenburg Palace is a Gothic Revival palace in Coburg featuring a symmetrical design with pointed arches, large windows, and ornate stone carvings across its facade. The building contains state apartments and two art galleries displaying Renaissance paintings.
The palace was commissioned in 1543 by Duke Johann Ernst on the site of a former Franciscan monastery and completed in its original Renaissance form by 1547. Over centuries, the building was repeatedly modified and gained its current Gothic Revival appearance through later renovations.
The rooms display family portraits showing the connections of the House of Sachsen-Coburg and Gotha to European royal families. Visitors can explore these personal images and see how the family was linked to other ruling households across generations.
Visitors can explore the building through regular guided tours that provide a detailed look at the interior rooms. It is recommended to plan ahead and check access times, as opening hours vary depending on the season.
The Hall of Giants contains 28 massive Atlas figures supporting the ceiling beams, representing a striking example of Baroque architectural work. These monumental sculptures often go unnoticed by first-time visitors despite their commanding presence.
