Landestheater Coburg, Opera house and theatre in Coburg, Germany
Landestheater Coburg is a theatre and opera house on Schlossplatz, the central square of Coburg in Bavaria, housed in a Neoclassical building with around 550 seats. It runs productions across opera, drama, and ballet throughout the year.
The institution was founded in 1827 by Duke Ernst I as the Herzoglich-Sächsisches Hoftheater. The current building opened in 1840 to meet the growing interest in theatrical performances in the city.
The Landestheater stages opera, drama, and ballet for audiences from Coburg and the surrounding region. Opera productions in particular draw visitors from well beyond the city.
The theatre sits right on Schlossplatz in central Coburg and is easy to reach on foot from most parts of the city center. Tickets and program information are available at the box office in the GLOBE Coburg shopping center.
Despite its modest size, Landestheater Coburg maintains one of the proportionally largest permanent ensembles among German theatres of a similar scale. This means that singers, actors, and dancers are on permanent contracts rather than being hired production by production.
