Priory of St. Wigbert

St. Wigbert Priory is a Benedictine monastery in Thuringia with a church, residential spaces for the monks, and areas for prayer and community gatherings. The grounds occupy a quiet setting designed to support monastic life and welcome visitors.

The priory was established in 1987 as the first Lutheran monastic community officially recognized after the Reformation in Germany. This founding marked a turning point in Lutheran church history and represented a revival of monastic traditions.

The monks here come from Lutheran, Roman Catholic, and Eastern Orthodox traditions yet live together under the Rule of Saint Benedict. This unusual combination shows how different faith communities can share daily life and work together.

The priory sits directly along the Unstrut cycling path, making it easy to reach by bike. Visitors can join the four daily prayer services, though it helps to check specific times beforehand.

The monastery brothers have contributed to restoring and rebuilding around 30 religious buildings across the region. This hands-on work links their monastic way of life with service to the local community.
