Lohr am Main, Administrative center in Main-Spessart district, Bavaria, Germany
Lohr am Main is a town in the Main-Spessart district of Bavaria that spreads along both riverbanks, surrounded by the forested hills of the Spessart range. The old town sits on the right bank and is overlooked by a historic castle, while newer residential areas and industrial zones occupy both sides of the valley.
The settlement received town rights in 1333 and initially belonged to the County of Rieneck before coming under the rule of the Archbishopric of Mainz. Over the centuries, it developed into a center for forestry and later for industrial production along the Main river.
The local museum inside the castle presents collections about forest crafts and regional glassmaking, showing how economic development was tied to natural resources. Visitors can see how the Spessart forest and the Main river shaped the daily lives and traditions of the people living here.
The town is best explored on foot, with the old town and castle forming compact areas that can be crossed within an hour. Visits work well during warmer months when the riverfront promenades along the Main invite walking.
The town hosts one of the largest manufacturers of hydraulic drive systems and control technology worldwide, providing thousands of jobs in the region. Additionally, high-quality pharmaceutical glass is produced here, used in the medical industry around the world.
