Köhlen, Rural settlement in Geestland, Germany
Köhlen is a small settlement in Geestland within the Cuxhaven district. The houses built from red brick line two main roads and are surrounded by open farmland and wooded areas.
The settlement was first documented around 1300 under the name Colne and began as roughly 18 farmsteads arranged in a circular pattern around a central square. This layout remained characteristic of the village for centuries.
The Maria-Magdalena celebration occurs on July 22nd, marking a historical event when a storm destroyed the local harvest during the medieval period.
The area is crisscrossed with walking and cycling paths that run through the surrounding landscape and are open to visitors. The flat terrain makes getting around comfortable for people of all abilities.
Television presenter Ina Müller, who spent her childhood here, received honorary citizenship of the village in 2011. This connection brought attention to the place beyond the local region.
