Wendisches Museum, Cultural heritage museum in Cottbus, Germany
The Wendisches Museum is a building dedicated to the history and traditions of the Sorbian people in Lower Lusatia. Around 15 exhibition rooms display objects, documents, and images that record the life and work of this community.
The institution began in 1908 as a collection within a local history museum before relocating to its current site. After major renovations, it reopened at this new location in 1994.
The museum displays traditional clothing and crafts that have been maintained in this region for generations. Visitors can see how colors and patterns reflect local identity and what role these garments play in celebrations and daily life.
Exhibition descriptions appear in both German and Sorbian languages, making it straightforward for visitors to follow the content in their preferred language. This bilingual approach helps guests engage with the material while moving through the rooms.
The museum holds one of the largest collections of traditional Sorbian clothing, including garments from the Spreewald region. Each piece demonstrates how regional differences and handcrafted skill are expressed through fabric and design.
