Tropical Islands, Indoor water park in Krausnick, Germany
Tropical Islands is a subtropical swimming paradise in Halbe that spreads through a converted airship hangar with pools, slides and lounging areas. Palm trees line the paths between sections, and artificial beaches run along a basin with continuously warm water.
The hangar was built in 2000 as an assembly site for cargo airships but never served that purpose. A Malaysian company purchased the building after the original operator went bankrupt and opened the current water park in 2004.
The South Seas village area displays wooden huts, bamboo structures and carvings that recall Thailand, Bali and other Pacific island regions. Visitors walk between recreated traditional buildings and tropical planting while the warm climate creates the feeling of permanent summer.
The complex sits about 60 kilometers (37 miles) south of Berlin and offers overnight stays from hotel rooms to camping tents within the facility. Those who only want to swim usually find more space and shorter queues at the slides during morning hours and on weekdays.
An artificial river runs through the entire hall and forms the longest indoor waterway in Germany at over 820 feet (250 meters). The rainforest house contains about 50,000 plants representing around 600 species that grow in a multilevel area around wooden walkways.
