Seesen, Urban municipality in Goslar district, Germany

Seesen is an urban municipality in Goslar district situated on the northwestern edge of the Harz mountain range. The town encompasses nine separate localities and spans approximately 102 square kilometers across Lower Saxony.

The original Saxon settlement of Sehusa was documented in 974 through a royal deed from Emperor Otto II. In 1428 the settlement received town privileges from Duke Otto II, marking a significant change in its administrative standing.

The town maintains active partnerships with international cities including Wantage in England, Carpentras in France, and Montecorvino Rovella in Italy. These connections bring regular visitors and cultural exchanges to the community.

The municipality connects nine distinct localities with a combined population of approximately 19,159 residents. When exploring, it helps to think of each locality such as Bilderlahe, Bornhausen, and Engelade as separate points to visit.

Heinrich Engelhard Steinweg built his first grand piano in his Seesen kitchen in 1836. This instrument now resides in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
