Wittenberge, Medium-sized district town in Prignitz, Germany.
Wittenberge is a medium-sized district town in Prignitz on the Elbe River between Berlin and Hamburg at 25 meters (82 feet) elevation. The town runs along the riverbank with residential neighborhoods and a central market area surrounded by brick buildings from the early 20th century.
The settlement received official town rights on July 22nd, 1300, and remained a trading station along the Elbe for centuries. With the arrival of the Singer Sewing Machine Company in 1903, the place transformed into an industrial site with new factory buildings and worker housing.
The Town Hall tower serves as a meeting point and marks the center where local gatherings take place throughout the year. Streets around the market area still carry names that refer to the industrial past and former factory workers who once shaped daily life here.
The center is easy to explore on foot as most sights and shops lie close together within a few blocks. The Elbe promenade offers a flat path for walks or cycling along the river without major elevation changes.
The medieval Steintor from 1450 is the oldest surviving structure and stands as the last visible part of the former city fortifications. Visitors can walk through the gate from both sides and notice the thickness of the old walls that once controlled access to the town.
