Himmelpfort, Historic monastery district in Fürstenberg/Havel, Germany
Himmelpfort is a district in Fürstenberg/Havel situated on sandy elevation among pine forests and bordered by four lakes with the Woblitz river running through it. The area includes the settlements of Pian, Kastaven, and Woblitz, connected by cycling paths that crisscross the landscape.
The Cistercian monastery Coeli Porta was founded in 1299 when Brother Otto named the location after viewing the landscape from an elevated vantage point. The monastery shaped the region for centuries and became the center of human settlement in the area.
The former monastery church displays a baroque pulpit altar from the 1600s and ancient tombstones that mark the community's past. Today it hosts regular services and summer evening concerts that bring visitors into its quiet interior.
The area is well-suited for cycling, with numerous paths connecting the lakes and forests throughout the landscape. The flat terrain and clear signage make it easy to navigate and explore.
Since 1984, a Christmas post office here has answered thousands of letters from children around the world during the holiday season. This unusual tradition has made the place a symbol of holiday goodwill.
