Gartenstadt Falkenberg
Gartenstadt Falkenberg, Garden city in Bohnsdorf, Berlin, Germany
Gartenstadt Falkenberg is a residential development in Treptow-Köpenick with more than one hundred single-family houses spread across around four and a half hectares. The houses are arranged in rows and each comes with a spacious garden plus connections to water, gas, and electricity.
The project was developed in 1912 by architect Bruno Taut for a Berlin housing cooperative to address the worker housing crisis. The settlement was built quickly and is now considered one of the early examples of modern social housing in Germany.
The settlement was designed as a response to housing shortages, aiming to provide workers with dignified homes and personal gardens. Today you can still see how the houses are arranged around their green spaces and how residents use these shared neighborhood areas.
The settlement is located in southeast Berlin and is easily accessible by public transportation. The best way to explore the grounds is on foot or by bicycle to observe the houses and gardens at leisure.
Each house received a different exterior color, earning the settlement the nickname Tuschkastensiedlung, or Paint Box Settlement. This colorful design was revolutionary for its time and made each house easy for residents to recognize.
