Laage, municipality in the Rostock district
Laage is a small town in the Rostock District of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, set along the Recknitz river amid flat farmland and patches of forest. The town is compact, with an old brick church at its center and streets lined with buildings from different periods, giving it a straightforward, unpretentious character.
The area around Laage was settled in the Stone Age, and during the Middle Ages a castle held by the Werle family made it a local center for trade along the river crossing. In the 20th century, a military airfield built nearby changed the character of the area, and it later became a civilian airport after German reunification.
The name Laage has Slavic roots, a reminder that this area was settled long before German communities arrived. The old brick church near the town center still draws locals together for seasonal events and remains a reference point for daily life in the town.
The town center is easy to walk around, but a bike or car is helpful for reaching the surrounding forests and countryside. Laage is close enough to Rostock that day trips in either direction work well, making it convenient as a base for the region.
Laage is one of the few small towns in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern with direct access to an international airport offering connections to several European cities. From the edge of town, you can watch planes taking off above the flat fields, which makes for an unexpected contrast with the rural surroundings.
