Schmölln

Schmölln is a town in Thuringia that sits on elevated ground above green valleys and encompasses several smaller villages nearby. The buildings show different styles from different periods, with the historic center organized around a central square.

The first written mention appears in 1066, followed by the founding of a monastery on Pfefferberg in the 12th century. This religious center attracted pilgrims and shaped how the place grew over many generations.

The name comes from a medieval Benedictine abbey that shaped life here for centuries. Walking through town, you can still sense how this religious past influenced the way the place developed and looks today.

Cars can reach the town via the A4 motorway at exit 61, and roads connect it well from different directions. A train station links the place to larger cities, giving visitors several ways to arrive.

The town underwent a major reshaping in 2019 when several surrounding communities were incorporated, greatly expanding its area. This change made it a significantly larger administrative region than before.
