Guxhagen, municipality in Schwalm-Eder-Kreis in Hesse, Germany
Guxhagen is a municipality in the Schwalm-Eder-Kreis district of Hesse, made up of several villages including Albshausen, Ellenberg, and Wollrode. The area sits in a hilly landscape with fields and forests between the town of Melsungen and the Kellerwald region.
Guxhagen took its current form in the early 1970s when several independent villages were merged into one municipality during an administrative reform in Hesse. Each of these villages has much older roots, with some settlements going back to the medieval period.
The name Guxhagen comes from its oldest settlement, which appears in medieval records under a similar form. Half-timbered houses still stand along the village roads, giving a clear sense of how rural life in this part of Hesse has looked for generations.
The area is easiest to reach by car, as public transport connections in this part of Hesse are limited. Walkers and cyclists can follow trails through the surrounding forests and toward the nearby Kellerwald-Edersee National Park.
Within the municipality stands the Breitenau Memorial, housed in a former Cistercian abbey that was used as a labor camp and concentration camp during the 20th century. The building is now open to visitors as a place of remembrance, and the contrast between its monastic architecture and its later history is hard to ignore.
