The Church of the Holy Spirit features a tall tower rising above the marketplace, with its stone walls displaying medieval architectural elements and large windows.
Construction of the current church building began in 1398 under Elector Ruprecht III, replacing a Romanesque basilica that previously stood at this location.
The church housed the Bibliotheca Palatina, containing thousands of manuscripts until 1623 when they were taken to Rome during the Thirty Years War.
The church opens daily for visitors from 11:00 to 17:00, with Protestant services held every Sunday at 11:00 in the morning.
From 1698 to 1936, the interior was divided by a partition wall that allowed Protestant and Catholic congregations to hold services simultaneously.
