Arbeitsgemeinschaft Geesthachter Eisenbahn, Railway museum in Hamburg, Germany
The Geesthacht Railway Association operates train rides on a route spanning approximately 14 kilometers between Hamburg-Bergedorf and Geesthacht using historic locomotives and original preserved carriages. The line runs through northern German countryside and features vehicles from the early 1900s through the post-war era.
The organization was founded in 1975 to revive historic train travel in the region and preserve the railway heritage. In 1980 the association acquired a steam locomotive originally built in 1945 for regional service, which became the centerpiece of its collection.
The collection displays steam locomotives and carriages from different periods of German railway history, which visitors can see and experience during the rides. These working vehicles shape the character of the journey between the two towns.
Visitors should note that rides are offered seasonally and typically run on weekends, making advance planning useful. The stations in Bergedorf and Geesthacht are accessible by public transportation, and the journey itself takes about one to one and a half hours.
During summer months the association occasionally organizes special themed rides where performers and musicians add a festive atmosphere to the train journeys. These events transform the ride into more than simple transportation, making it a social gathering for railway enthusiasts and families.
