Hohenschwangau, Alpine village district in Schwangau, Germany
Hohenschwangau is a village district nestled in the Bavarian Alps between two historic castles at around 830 meters elevation. The settlement features a central area with inns, shops, and hotels arranged along main paths, plus scattered residential buildings and the Museum of the Bavarian Kings housed in a former hotel structure.
The area was home to a medieval fortress belonging to the Schwangau family in the 12th century before the two well-known castles were built in later periods. These earlier structures shaped the location where the village developed.
The village takes its name from the castle that once stood here and has become a hub for travelers exploring both nearby fortresses. Shops, restaurants, and hotels are arranged to serve the constant flow of visitors passing through the valley.
The location is easy to reach with ample parking areas and clear paths leading to both castles accessible on foot from the village center. Wear sturdy shoes as some routes are steep and weather in the mountains can change quickly.
French filmmaker Julien Duvivier shot exterior scenes here for his film "Marianne de ma jeunesse," using the mountain landscape as backdrop. This production demonstrates how the alpine setting drew international attention back in the mid-twentieth century.
