Möhne Reservoir, Artificial reservoir in Sauerland, Germany
The Möhne Reservoir consists of four connected basins storing 135 million cubic meters of water between Soest and Arnsberg in North Rhine-Westphalia.
The reservoir opened in 1913 after five years of construction and remained Europe's largest dam until British bombers severely damaged it during Operation Chastise in 1943.
The reservoir functions as a European bird sanctuary under Natura 2000, providing essential habitat for thousands of waterfowl and thirteen fish species.
The reservoir generates hydroelectric power while regulating water supply for the Ruhr region through a control center in Essen that operates twenty-four hours daily.
The dam structure stretches 650 meters in length and rises 40 meters high, incorporating specific design features developed by Professor Otto Intze for enhanced stability.
