Ummanz, Baltic island near Rügen, Germany
Ummanz is an island in the Baltic Sea near Rügen with flat terrain and wide meadows dotted across its surface. A bridge connects it directly to the larger Rügen, making it easy to visit.
The island came under the control of a hospital foundation in Stralsund from 1341 onwards, with citizens managing the territory on behalf of this institution. This arrangement shaped the island's governance for centuries.
The church in Waase holds an altar carved in Antwerp with intricate details that were originally intended for Stralsund. This artwork ended up becoming part of the island's small community instead.
Reaching the island is straightforward via the bridge from Rügen without any additional boat travel needed. The flat landscape makes exploring on foot or by bike quite easy.
The island sits within a national park where herons, geese, cormorants, and eagles nest in significant numbers. Bird watchers can regularly spot these large species soaring over the meadows, especially during migration seasons.
